[Dealer Login](https://dealer.sukup.com/) - Search # Understanding the 2026 REAP Grant Requirements Oct 20, 2026 **Understanding the 2026 REAP Grant Requirements** For farmers, investing in new equipment can help find new ways to make daily operations more efficient, manage costs and prepare for future harvests. When financial assistance is available, it can make those decisions a little easier. Earlier this year, the USDA, the United States Department of Agriculture, made the decision to pause REAP (Rural Energy for America Program) grant awards while working through changes to the program. Farmers who are considering making energy-related improvements need to understand what comes next with these updated rules that took effect on October 16, 2026. **What Is the REAP Grant Program?** Before diving into the new rules, it is important to understand why REAP matters to farmers. REAP was created to help eligible agricultural producers and small rural businesses invest in renewable energy and energy-efficiency improvements. For farmers, upgrading existing grain drying equipment may offer an opportunity to improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs. Upgrading older material handling equipment may also qualify if the project meets REAP’s energy-efficiency requirements. However, eligibility depends on the specific project and its ability to demonstrate qualifying energy savings under USDA requirements. **So, What Are the New REAP Grant Rules?** According to the [USDA](https://www.rd.usda.gov/programs-services/energy-programs/rural-energy-america-program-renewable-energy-systems-energy-efficiency-improvement-guaranteed-loans), farmers and other eligible applicants should be aware of the following changes: - **Projects must be completed before applying.** Applicants must complete and operate their projects before submitting a REAP grant application, meaning they will need to plan how to cover the initial project costs. - **Energy savings must be documented.** Applicants must provide 12 months of actual energy production or savings data, along with 12 months of pre-project data, to demonstrate the project's impact. - **Application timing may change.** Farmers should monitor USDA announcements for application instructions and funding opportunities rather than assume applications will be accepted year round. Kerry Hartwig, Dryer Sales Director at Sukup, said, “The updated REAP guidelines change how and when applicants can apply for grant funding. With projects required to be completed before an application is submitted, farmers will need to understand the new requirements, including the documentation needed to demonstrate energy savings or production.” **REAP Grant Limits: How Much Funding Is Available?** In addition to the changes to the application process, the updated rules establish new grant limits. Eligible projects have a minimum grant request of $1,500, with maximum awards of: - **Renewable energy systems:** Up to $500,000. - **Energy-efficiency improvements:** Up to $250,000. These amounts represent the maximum grant awards, not guaranteed funding. The amount an applicant may receive depends on the project and applicable program requirements. **How can farmers and dealers prepare?** Farmers should consider project costs, potential energy savings and financing, especially since projects must be completed before applying. Dealers can help farmers identify equipment options that fit their needs and plan for future upgrades. They may also be able to connect farmers with grant writers who can assist with the REAP application process. By reviewing [USDA guidance](https://www.rd.usda.gov/programs-services/energy-programs/rural-energy-america-program-renewable-energy-systems-energy-efficiency-improvement-guaranteed-loans), farmers and dealers can better understand grant requirements and upcoming application windows. “Every operation has different needs.
